As teenagers, Zachary Oberzan and his older brother Gator were such fans of Jean-Claude van Damme's films that they made their own versions of several of these films using a simple video camera. Twenty years later the two brothers get together again to remake these films – scene for scene, with the same dialogue, costumes, and props. And yet everything is different, because in the time between then and now Gator's life has obviously come apart at the seams…
Zachary Oberzan is a member of Nature Theatre of Oklahoma, which was a guest in 2007 at SPIELART with their piece NO DICE. Based on the principle of "before and after" photographs he combines the presentation of film excerpts with rewritten lyrics to songs and anecdotical-philosophical reflections on the past years. Could the course of the brothers' histories have taken different paths, too?

+BiographyZachary Oberzan is an original member of the theater collective Nature Theater of Oklahoma, based in New York City. With Nature Theater, he collaborated and performed in numerous productions, including: A BALLET BRUT, NO DICE and the one-man show RAMBO SOLO. His feature film FLOODING WITH LOVE FOR THE KID (an adaption David Morrell's 1972 novel FIRST BLOOD, which introduced the world to the character of Rambo) is a one-man cinematic war shot and edited in its entirety by Zachary (portraying all 26 roles) in his 220 square foot apartment in Manhattan. It is currently screening in theaters, art institutions and film festivals in North America and Europe. He has performed with the Wooster Group and Richard Foreman, and released two albums of songs, most recently Athletes of Romance.
In 2010, Oberzan's solo theater/film piece YOUR BROTHER. REMEMBER? was premiered at Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels. An examination of family deterioration and redemption, it employs the life of Belgian action star Jean-Claude Van Damme as a vehicle to tell its bittersweet story. |
