Wu Wenguang
Memory: Hunger – Protest Amnesia through documentary and theatre
+Short Teaser
"In 2008 I worked as the artistic director of Living Dance Studio on the performance MEMORY, a collection of personal memories of the Cultural Revolution during the 1960s. After rehearsals we wanted to continue working on the 'amnesia period' and (re)awaken our sleeping memories. Two years later the second piece of the MEMORY series, which this time dealt with the subject of the 'Great Famine' from 1959 to 1960, was performed. As Modernity advances in China, the historical events are being pushed into the background to such an extent that one has to fight against amnesia" (Wenguang Wu).

+Biography

Wenguang Wu (b. 1956) studied Chinese literature at the University of Yunnan. Wu is a documentary filmmaker with an international reputation, a freelance author, artist, and producer of dance and theater productions. In 1994 Wu co-founded with Wen Hui the independent dance group Living Dance Studio in Beijing, and some of the results, for example, were REPORT ON GIVING BIRTH (1999) and REPORT ON BODY (2003).

Why it’s fun to be an expert for yesterday’s news
+Short Teaser
The world is becoming faster every day. Here a revolution, there an accident in an atomic reactor combined with a flood, somewhere genocide is taking place, and we shouldn't forget to mention the financial crisis. Everything occurs, but nothing happens. We hear about almost everything, but change nothing. Let's look at least once again at how events are happening and how they are described to us, because a concentrated look back is perhaps a look at the here and now.

+Biography

Hans-Werner Kroesinger (b. 1962) studied from 1983 to 1988 at the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaften at the Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen. Assistant director and dramatic advisor to Robert Wilson (HAMLETMASCHINE; SALOME; and THE FOREST); in 1989 he was an assistant to Heiner Müller on the production HAMLET/HAMLETMASCHINE at Deutsches Theater Berlin. Since 1993, his has done his own productions, as well as productions at renowned municipal and state theaters and in the independent theater scene. Kroesinger's works received invitations to numerous national and international festivals. In 2007, the director received the Brothers Grimm Award from the State of Berlin.

Sanja Mitrovic
Theatre as the existing - theatre as the possible
+Short Teaser
In the moment when cruel economic measures – the consequences of a economic crisis caused by the financial sector – lead to extensive and frequently violent public unrest all over Europe, it could be instructive to consider the types of answers that we – as artists as well as citizens – have at our disposal. When the subjective perspective decisively influences our perception of reality – and therefore the conditions in which we live – then what does the relationship between the individual and the social body look like? As a theatermaker and performer I would like to give those persons a voice who are regularly unnoticed and unheard – by means of repetitive new configurations und individual and collective history, in order to bring closer reality and imagination, existence and possibilities.

+Biography

The Serbian director and author Sanja Mitrovic (b. 1978) immigrated ten years ago to the Netherlands, and she studied contemporary theater in Amsterdam. In 2009, she founded Stand Up Tall Productions, which, as a socially and politically committed theater, deals with transnational structures such as immigration and political and cultural integration. Mitrovic's works are composed of a montage of theater, performance, dance and visual art, and they are also composed of the contrasts between personal histories and historical facts.

Dieter Rucht
Expressive und symbolic aspects of new protest forms
+Short Teaser
Forms of protest can draw their attractiveness from two contrasting moments: On the one hand, from the ritualized repetition of what's familiar, which should provide meaning and the feeling of community, and on the other hand, from the creative organization and variation of forms that are aimed at fun, recognition, surprise, subversion, irritation, intimidation, etc. This is illustrated using examples of contemporary protests with the aid of descriptions, images, and film sequences.

+Biography

A native of the Allgäu region in Bavaria, Dieter Rucht (b. 1946), was a co-director of the former research group "Civil Society, Citizenship and Political Mobilization in Europe" at the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) starting in 2005, where he was previously the director of the study group "Public Politics and Mobilization." Fields of research: sociology of public politics, social movements and political protest, political participation and sociology of conflict. With a degree in education and a doctorate in political science, he studies phenomena of our times, such as the media revolution and network-supported protests, the financial crisis, and global governance.

Paula-Irene Villa
Körereinsatz: Feminismus zwischen Pop und Porno
+Short Teaser
Body politics essentially belong to the strategies and goals of a multitude of feministic articulations. Here the insight is in the foreground that (sexual) bodies are not just there naturally, but rather that they are "made" in social constellations. And so the main concerns of the new women's movements ("Second Wave") are to not only seize the rights over one's own body, but to go beyond that and have power over one's own nature. A result of this are pronounced ambivalent freedoms. From the "My womb belongs to me" slogan in the 1970s and 1980s follows, under certain conditions, in 2011, "For that reason I can also have the fat on my tummy liposucked whenever I want." The lecture will look into the ambivalences of feministic body politics, with a focus on contemporary pop cultural phenomena (Lady Bitch Ray, Lady Gaga, among others).

+Biography

Paula-Irene Villa (b. 1968), grew up in Argentina, the U.S., Canada and Germany. She is a sociologist and has been a full professor of sociology and gender studies at LMU Munich since 2008. Her focus is on theories of sociology, sociology of culture and the human body, biopolitics, and parenthood. Research projects include cosmetic surgery, Argentine tango, and feminist pop cultures.

Image till victory?
+Short Teaser
The theme of the lecture is the publication of photographs taken during the revolt in Syria on Facebook and via other virtual communication media. What kind of network does this act of photographic documentation have when viewed through the prism of Dogma 95, the cinematography manifest of the Danish filmmakers Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg? In this lecture-performance, I would like to examine this pattern and present my personal interpretations of this phenomenon.

+Biography

Rabih Mroué (b. 1967 in Beirut), actor, director, and author who has written for, among others, the Lebanese quarterly KALAMON and TDR (New York). He is a co-founder and board member of the Beirut Art Center Association (BAC).
