In the first scene of Shakespeare's KING LEAR, the old man attempts with a big gesture to bequeath his kingdom to his three daughters and thus to reach an agreement for providing care for himself in his old age – a plan that fails in a violent way. Of all the bartering transactions in which we are ever involved, the one between generations is the most complicated and most opaque. Value and exchange value (in other words, money and love) are shrouded as a matter of principle, and no one has ever officially agreed to the terms of exchange. The stall that has to be cleaned here is filled to the top with data and details, gems, family trees, successions, hereditary diseases, oaths of love, plans for the care of sick and old people, gasoline receipts, and feelings of guilt – all of the bargaining chips in this public confrontation between daughters and their fathers.
